CRIIGEN

CRIIGEN (Committee for Research and Independent Information on Genetic Engineering) is an independent non-profit association of scientific counter-expertise to study GMOs, pesticides and impacts of pollutants on health and environment, and to develop non polluting alternatives. It proposes expertise, advice, at different levels: legal, scientific, sociological and economic. It is particularly involved in the case of GMOs bringing together a panel of top scientists totally independent of biotechnological companies and governments. One of the main objectives is to reach transparency on blood analyses (crude data) of mammals having eaten GMOs in regulatory tests. In general, transparency is requested on the results of commercial genetic engineering and on the cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) that might have an impact on the environment and/or health.

GenØk

NORWAY: GenØk – Centre for Biosafety was founded in 1998 and is a non-commercial foundation located in the research environment at the University of Tromsø and Forskningsparken (the Science Park). GenØk is engaged in research and teaching in the professional field Gene Ecology. The Foundation focuses in particular on the environmental and health related consequences of the application of gene technology and gene modifi cation. GenØk is also engaged in the broad dissemination of information and offers advisory and consulting services in its field of expertise.

INBI

NEW ZEALAND: The Centre for Integrated Research in Biosafety (INBI) aims to contribute to the increased understanding and more effective management of emerging biotechnologies. Our research is:

  1. Independent We are practiced in the techniques associated with recent and emerging biotechnologies, but we have no financial interest in their development or prohibition.
  2. Transdisciplinary INBI brings together scientists skilled in biotechnology research and safety assessment and social scientists with experience in the evaluation of the ethical, social, cultural and political impacts of novel technologies. This team is committed to working collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries and to modelling new forms of integrated research.
  3. Collaborative and International When conducting capacity-building activities in the developing world, we offer our own expertise while also working with the knowledge and specific needs of the country or region.
  4. Committed to Biosafety The Centre participates in the national biosafety framework of New Zealand and supports, to the degree that we are able, the research needs of citizens, civic leaders, NGOs, scientists and others who are participating in their national biosafety frameworks.

INES

GERMANY: The International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility (INES) is an independent non-profit organisation committed to influencing the role and the impact that science and technology have on society. INES efforts focus on disarmament and international peace; ethics in science; responsibilities of scientists and the responsible use of science and technology; just and sustainable development.

Engineers and scientists play a key role, both in developing new knowledge that might threaten international security and in providing positive solutions for the future. They are as much a part of the problem as they can be a part of the solution.

INES Goals

– Abolition of nuclear weapons

– Promoting the responsible and sustainable use of science and technology

– Implementing ethical principles in the education of scientists and engineers

SGR

Scientists for Global Responsibility (incorporating Architects and Engineers for Social Responsibility, Electronics and Computing for Peace, Psychologists for Peace, and Scientists Against Nuclear Arms) is an independent organisation of scientists, architects and engineers committed to the ethical and accountable practice and use of science, design and technology. We believe science, design and technology should be used responsibly, in a way that contributes to justice and peace in human society, and to the long-term well-being of the wider environment.

Scientists for Global Responsibility:

  1. promotes ethical science, design and technology, based on the principles of openness, accountability, peace, social justice, and environmental sustainability
  2. is an independent UK-based membership organisation of over a 1000 natural and social scientists, engineers, IT professionals and architects
  3. carries out research, education, and lobbying centred around the military, environmental and political aspects of science, design and technology
  4. provides a support network for ethically-concerned professionals in these fields

UCCS

UCS

The Union of Concerned Scientists is the leading science-based nonprofit working for a healthy environment and a safer world. UCS combines independent scientific research and citizen action to develop innovative, practical solutions and to secure responsible changes in government policy, corporate practices, and consumer choices. What began as a collaboration between students and faculty members at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969 is now an alliance of more than 250,000 citizens and scientists. UCS members are people from all walks of life: parents and businesspeople, biologists and physicists, teachers and students. Our achievements over the decades show that thoughtful action based on the best available science can help safeguard our future and the future of our planet.
